Standard Mate Concentric and Coincident Assembly | SolidWorks Assembly Tutorial-3

Welcome to SolidWorks Assembly tutorials for beginners and in this assembly tutorial, you are going to learn how to use standard mate for assembling two components. In this example, only showing how to apply concentric and coincident standard mates using the parts as made in previous assembly tutorial. Let us starts to learn SolidWorks assembly using the standard mates features.

What is Standard Mate?

You know that Mates helps to control and assemble machine or design components movements with respect to each other. Its main job is to create geometric relation between the design components; that may be liner or rotational motion. It adds the degrees of freedom as per your design. There are many mates features such as standard mate, advanced mate, mechanical mate, smart mate and mate references.

Standard mate is normally used to provide linear relationship between components. It contains functions like coincident, concentric, parallel, perpendicular, tangent, distance, angle and lock.

In this assembly tutorial, you are going to see both concentric and coincident standard mate application.

How to Use Concentric Standard Mate

Open the SolidWorks and Select “New”. From the pop-up menu, select the “Assembly” file and you will get new assembly graphics interface as shown below.

Insert Design Components

Next step is to inserting the designed components into the assembly graphics interface. For that, click on the “browse” and select files from the pop-up dialogue box. Click “ok” to insert them which is shown below.

Note: Always insert the base part into assembly interface and fix it on the origin. It will help you to apply geometric relations between them.

By following the same steps, you can insert the “part-2” file into interface. For the 2nd part, you can place it anywhere. No need to fix it in origin.

Apply Concentric Standard Mate Feature

For that, click on “mate” button from the Assembly features command manager.

From the mate property manager, you have to select the entities to mate and apply relation between them.

First click on the Face as shown in the figure.

Then, click on the face of the part-2 component like as shown in the figure.

It will automatically apply concentric relation between two parts, which shown below.

If you want to finish the mating process, you can click on the green tick button.

Now, you can only apply linear motion along the axis and rotation motion.

In the next step, you restrict the linear motion by applying the coincident standard mate.

How to apply Coincident Mate in SolidWorks

This is continuation of the above tutorial. You can use mouse cursor for selecting the part and apply required movements as per your need. Use the center mouse button to rotate the entire assembly.

Again, you have to open the “Mate”. Select the Face 4 and Face 5 of both parts to apply coincident standard mate, as shown below.

Now, you can only rotate about the axis. No linear motion and its constrained by applying the coincident standard mate.

This way, you can apply concentric standard mate features between two machine or design components.
