SolidWorks Exercises-2: Polygon and Extrude Boss
Polygon is having ‘n’ number of sides with equal length. To create different shapes just change number of sides only. Here you are going to see 3D triangular block, cube, pentagon, hexagon and octagon. You can set any number of sides to create more polygons. The dimensions of polygons are controlled by the inscribed or circumscribed circle diameter.

SolidWorks Exercises: 3D Triangular Block
Step-1
Create a New Part File and Select the any plane. Here I’m select the “Top Plane”, like all other previous tutorial.
Checkout Best SolidWorks Training Materials here.
Step-2
Using polygon, you can create triangle profile in the sketch area. If you don’t know how to use it, read polygon drawing tutorial in detail here.
Using the Polygon button, draw polygon. In the polygon property manager enter the number of sides is “3” for creating triangular sketch.
The side dimensions are adjusted by entering the diameter of the inscriber circle in the property manger as shown in above image.
Step-3
“Exit the Sketch” and Select the “Sketch-1” from the Featuremanager design tree. Then go to “feature command manager” and select the “Extrude boss/base” button from it.
Step -4
Then you can see light yellow color preview of 3D triangular block with Extrude boss property manager. You need to enter the thickness of the block (22 mm) in the extrude property menu as shown in below figure.
Final Image of 3D triangular block is shown below.

Application of Draft Angle
If you on draft button in the property manager, then try to adjust the draft angle. You see like picture below.
Draft angle = 28 degree
Adjust the draft angle to get best shape of 3D triangular block for your work.
SolidWorks Exercises: Cube
Just follow the Step 1 for creating New part file plane selection.
Go to sketch area, select “polygon” tool like the step 2 in previous tutorial. You only need to set number of sides is “4” in polygon property manager. You will get a square profile.
After that, follow the Step 3 to make it solid 3D cube. (enter extrusion length = sides of the square profile).
You can also switch Draft on/off button to make cube sides drafted to inward or outward by setting different draft angle here. Previews are showed below.
Draft inward with 22 degree
Draft Outward with 22 degree
SolidWorks Exercises: Pentagon
Just follow the Step 1 for creating New part file plane selection.
Go to sketch area, select “polygon” tool like the step 2 in the first tutorial. You only need to set number of sides is “5” in polygon property manager. You will get a pentagon profile.
After that, follow the Step 3 to make it solid 3D pentagon. Set extrude length = 50mm (for example).
You can also switch Draft on/off button to make pentagon sides drafted to inward or outward by setting different draft angle here.
SolidWorks Exercises: Hexagon
Create new part file and select “Top plane”.
Go to sketch area, select “polygon” tool. You only need to set number of sides is “6” in polygon property manager.
You will get a hexagon profile.
After that, follow the Step 3 to make it solid 3D hexagon. Set extrude length = 50mm (for example).
You can also switch Draft on/off button to make hexagon sides drafted to inward or outward by setting different draft angle here. Previews are showed below.
Draft inward with 22 degree
Draft Outward with 22 degree
SolidWorks Exercises: Octagon
Creating New part file and select “Top plane”.
Go to sketch area, select “polygon” tool and you need to set number of sides is “8” in polygon property manager. You will get a octagon profile.
After that, follow the Step 3 to make it solid 3D octagon. Set extrude length = 50mm (for example).
You can also switch Draft on/off button to make octagon sides drafted to inward or outward by setting different draft angle here. Previews are showed below.
Draft inward with 22 degree
Draft Outward with 22 degree
